We have all heard of proteins, at least in the context of food and nutrition, but what actually is a protein? Proteins are one of the basic building blocks of living things. They are made up from large complex molecules and come in many different varieties, each one of which is designed to perform a unique function. Much of the infrastructure that makes up body tissue is constructed from proteins. Other uses include their role in substances such as enzymes which catalyse biochemical reactions, antibodies which fight infection, hormones which control body functions, and haemoglobin which is used to carry oxygen around the blood - to name but a few. 6000 Years and One Family

This article is about mitochondrial DNA. If you already feel blinded by science, please read on, as I will attempt to explain things in simple terms.

In previous articles, we looked at the subject of DNA and also at the complexity of the cell. Each of our cells contains a number of working components. Each cell has a nucleus which contains our main DNA. Another cell component is known as a mitochondrion, and each cell contains a number of mitochondria, the main function of which is to generate energy via a complex chemical reaction between sugar and oxygen. The Appreciation of Beauty

Just a couple of days ago, I was driving home against the backdrop of a particularly spectacular sunset. I live on the Wirral Peninsula in the north-west of England, my home being about a mile inland from the coast. Being on the west coast of England, we are blessed with a good number of beautiful sunsets, every one of which is different from another. For those of you who know the local area, I was driving from Wallasey towards our home in Moreton along Leasowe Road. As one approaches a left-hand bend in the road that turns towards Moreton, there is a coastal car park on the right. I felt the urge to pull in (more…)

The Beginning of Time

The question must have been asked countless times as to whether there was a beginning of time or whether time goes back into eternity past. I am going to give a definitive answer and say that there has got to be a beginning of time. You may ask the question as to why, so let us look at this in a bit more detail.

To possess an infinite number of things (whatever those ‘things’ might be) is an impossibility, as it defies all laws of logic and reason. (more…)

Programming with Precision

Although my academic background was in pure science, I have spent my whole working career in computer technology, mainly in the programming field. Although I am now largely retired, I still find myself doing a fair bit of programming in connection with one thing or another. I have been challenged during the last week whilst working on the upgrading of a certain piece of computer software. This focused around one particular file that currently contains 1757 lines of software code. (more…)

The Atom

Most of us are familiar with the idea that all matter is made up of tiny atoms. In fact they are so small that a single atom has a diameter of approximately 0.2 nanometres (that is to say a 5 millionth of a millimetre). The atom itself is however made up of smaller particles, of which there are three basic types (not to mention that there is evidence that these can be sub-divided further, though we won’t go there at the moment). The Eye

(Advanced camera technology)

A modern TV or computer display running at HD (high definition) resolution creates an image from a set of nearly 8.3 million pixels (tiny dots), each one of which contains red, green and blue light in varying intensities to create the required colour. (N.B. Red, green and blue are the standard primary colours when mixing light, as opposed to the red, yellow and blue recognised by an artist.) The number of possible colours that can be created by a standard TV or monitor is just under 16.8 million. This goes to show how far technology has advanced, (more…)

Clear Evidence for God in Creation

A scientist might well say that we cannot prove that God exists, and whilst there is a sense that God’s existence cannot be proved systematically by scientific method (i.e. through experimental procedures), there is another side of this that we need to look at very seriously. To quote from the Bible:-
